“I’m good at what I do, Lyssa. So are the people I work with. We can find Archimedes. We can take him.” He clasped her shoulders, slid his hands to her elbows, down her arms, then squeezed her ice-cold fingers. “Jack trusted me. So can you.”

She swallowed, and the gulp echoed between them. She looked down at the bag holding her weapon. One breath. Two breaths. Had he persuaded her? He had this one chance. If she didn’t choose to go with him, he’d have to do something he really didn’t want to do— take her to the safe house against her will. He prayed she’d put her faith in him.

“Jack trusted you,” she said finally. “I’ll give you a chance, but if I get bad vibes, I won’t say goodbye. I’ll just disappear.”

“And I’ll be chasing after you until this is over.”

Spotlight on Short Contemporary: “Carry Her Heart,” by Holly Jacobs (Montlake Romance)

“I can see you thinking,” Ned said. “You’re running through a bunch of scenarios. What if we dated and it didn’t work out? Could we still be friends? What if we dated and it did work out? What then? What if . . .”

“Yes,” I admitted. “I don’t want to lose you.”

“Here’s something else I know from our walks and talks, and from reading your books . . . running through multiple scenarios is a big part of your profession. But maybe just this once, you don’t. Maybe you simply try a date with me and see how it goes.”

“What if I lose you in the process?” I asked. That was my true fear. I’d come to count on Ned in a way I didn’t count on anyone else. Not even Coop.

He pulled me close. I thought he might kiss me, but he didn’t. He simply held me and said, “Of all the scenarios that you can imagine, take that one off the table. You’re my friend. My best friend, truth be told. I think there could be more between us, but I’m absolutely certain there can’t be less.”

“Tell me you’re joking,” he repeated harshly.

She pushed a hand against his chest and stood back, her chin lifting to a defiant angle. “What’s the big deal?”

His eyes rounded. “You’re a twenty-seven year-old, former stripper, virgin?”

Her face went even hotter. “Are you going to tag that description on every time you talk about me now, because I’m afraid that doesn’t work for me.”

He closed his eyes and raked his hair back from his face. “I don’t understand how this could happen.”

Her mouth flattened. “Simple. I haven’t gotten into bed with a man. Not that you’d understand anything about that. Half the women in the Valley are walking around with your cute little diamond charm bracelets on as if they were the Medal of Honor.”

He let out a harsh breath and opened his eyes. “It was the combination of your age and background, Bailey. You haven’t exactly been living in a nunnery.”

She put her hands on her hips and stared at him. “What were you hoping? That I’d have all sorts of tricks up my sleeve, living the life?”

His gaze narrowed. “I wasn’t actually thinking, Bailey. As you can imagine after what just happened.”

Spotlight on Historical: “A Lady of Notoriety,” by Diane Gaston (Harlequin, Historical)

He ran back to the fire and was silhouetted inside the doorway when a huge rush of glowing embers fell from the ceiling. The building groaned, as if in the throes of death. Timbers fell from the roof and the man’s arms rose in front of his face. Daphne watched in horror as one large flaming timber knocked him to the floor.

“No!” Without thinking, she ran towards him.

Other men reached him first, pulling him by his clothing until he was in the yard. The building collapsed entirely.

Daphne knelt down next to him as they brushed away glowing cinders from his coat and patted out smoking cloth.

“Is he alive?” she cried.

They rolled him on his back, and one man put a finger to the pulse in his neck. “He’s alive for now.”

Daphne gasped. “I know him!”

Though his face was dark with soot and pink with burns, she recognized him. He was Hugh Westleigh, younger brother of the new Earl Westleigh. He was also the brother of the lady she’d so terribly wronged at the Masquerade Club.

Spotlight on Historical: “Sinfully Yours,” by Cara Elliott (Grand Central Publishing, Forever)

CElliott-Sinfully Yours

Her pulse began to pound, her breath began to quicken. Shaking off the horrid novel histrionics, Anna scowled. “You’re not only an idiot, Lord Davenport, you are an annoying idiot. I’m well aware that you take perverse pleasure in trying to . . .”

Cocking his head, he waited.

“To annoy me,” she finished lamely.

Another laugh. “Clearly I am having some success, so I can’t be all that bumbling.”

To give the Devil his due, he had a quick wit. Biting back an involuntary smile, Anna turned her head to look out over the shadowed gardens. Flames from the torchieres on the main terrace danced in the breeze, their glow gilding the silvery moonlight as it dappled over the thick ivy vines that covered the perimeter walls.

She shouldn’t find him amusing. And yet like a moth drawn to an open fire . . .

“What? No clever retort?” said Devlin.

Anna willed herself not to respond.

“I see.” Somehow he found a way to inch even closer. His trousers were now touching her skirts. “You mean to ignore me.”

“If you were a gentleman, you would go away and spare me the effort.”

“Allow me to point out two things, Miss Sloane. Number one—I was here first.”

The marquess had a point.

“And number two . . .” His hand touched her cheek. He wasn’t wearing gloves and the heat of his bare fingers seemed to scorch her skin. “We both know I’m no gentleman.”

Spotlight on Historical: “A Scandalous Rogue,” by Janmarie Anello (Self-published)

Lord Beaudeville greeted the two older women before approaching Olivia, his eyes darkening, his gaze intent upon her face. As his sister performed the introduction, Olivia’s hands curled into fists. She hated the way he made her feel, vulnerable and stupid and irresponsible in her actions. She hated that he was a dissolute nobleman, as steeped in vice as her father. She hated the way his brows lifted and the twitch in his lips grew into a sensuous smile, as if he were aware of the treacherous attraction tugging at her heart, causing her breath to burn her throat.

He took her hand in his, used his long fingers to unfurl her fist, sending an undesirable shiver of awareness up her arm, despite the glove covering her skin. “Miss Hart,” he said, bending over her hand, as if to place a kiss on her knuckles. “What a pleasure to see you again.”

The inexplicable desire she felt to thread her fingers through his dark hair bewildered her.

“Lord Beaudeville,” she said, hoping she didn’t sound as breathless as she felt.

Spotlight on Romantic Suspense: “Minutes to Kill,” by Melinda Leigh (Montlake Romance)

Leigh-MinutesToKill-19328-CV-FT

Her hand in the middle of his bare chest stopped him. She was studying him with suspicion, almost wariness. “What are we doing here, Brody?”

“I don’t know. I’m making this up as I go along.” But he was thinking ahead. Maybe ten minutes ahead. No more. He refused to think about the reports he’d file tomorrow or about today’s shooting.

Or where Hannah would be in a month. There was only here and now.

He saw her hand inching lower, sliding down his abs . . .

“Do we have to have a plan?” he asked, his voice rough.

“I like plans.”

“How does this fit into your plan?” Brody caught the back of her neck with his free hand, gently pulled her in, and covered her mouth with his.
